What is a toxic relationship?
An toxic relationship pulls you down into the shadows, where other people's resentment becomes your burden and you are taken off the straight and narrow path.
Toxic relationships take away your joy and peace. Saul tried to pull Jonathan into his hatred and Jonathan see and feel his bitterness for David.
Jonathan had a choice, he decided not to move towards resentment. Many of us, too, may face such choices in life, whether to align with those who fuel resentment, talk bad about everything and everyone or to seek out relationships rooted in godly love and truth.
Signs of a Toxic Relationship:
1. Bitterness and Anger: Just like Saul, toxic people thrive on hatred and will seek to involve you in their conflict. Proverbs 22:24-25 warns: “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.
2. Not Aligned to God’s Will: A toxic relationship wants your loyalty at the expense of your relationship with God. They want you out of alignment with God's word and will for your life juts to make themselves feel better. Like Jonathan, we may be tempted to honor familial or close bonds, but Matthew 10:37 reminds us: “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.”
How to Navigate a Toxic Relationship:
Seek God's Wisdom: Just as David sought counsel and refuge in the Lord, so must we. In moments of confusion, the righteous turn to God for guidance, and the Holy Spirit will reveal the path to freedom. James 1:5 speaks: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.”
Surround Yourself with Kindred Spirits: When the enemy seeks to destroy you, he will send the wrong people into your life. But when God wants to bless you, He brings kindred spirits who lift you up. Find yourself a company of believers. When we surround ourselves with those who walk in the light of Christ, we are strengthened. Relationships built on shared faith, prayer, and a desire for holiness allow us to grow spiritually, leaving behind the snares of bitterness and anger.
Proverbs 27:17 declares, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Remember this: God desires to bless you with relationships that bring life, not strife. Heed His Word, and seek those whose hearts are aligned with His.
